After Burn Report: Go here for an "after burn" summary of this project at Burning Man 2013.

Summary: We are bringing sound to a few potties in every bank of port-a-potties on the playa at Burning Man 2013. Feel free to send your ideas (concepts, scripts, mp3 files) for short in-potty audio experiences to PAudiotron@aol.com, or post them on Facebook. To learn more or volunteer to be part of this cutting edge audio art project, please read on!

Behold! The PAudiotron (sounds like "potty-o-tron")! Yes, emerging from the multi-burn addled brain of Sound Man, a Burning Man 2013 art project is headed to the playa. Yes, folks, the last place on the playa that you could retreat to in order to have a few moments of peace, the port-a-potty, has just lost its sacred sanctuary status. Burning Man 2013 brings the introduction of the PAudiotron into many of these most solitary spaces:

  • What is the PAudiotron experience? Motion activated, as you enter the a port-a-potty, an audio experience is queued up and delivered for your call-of-nature moment on the playa. Waterproof (withstand the cleaning crew), secure (withstanding casual removal), battery powered (should last most of the week), motion activated (entry, exit, and whenever a potty denizen triggers the motion sensor), each potty installed with a custom mp3 playlist, this sound delivery unit and content have been carefully chosen for the Burning Man potty environment.

  • What kind of audio experiences are we talking about? The possibilities are literally endless. See the guidelines to get some idea. Particular potties may offer PAudiotron playlists with themed material. Needless to say, each audio experience holds to strict "this doesn't suck" quality metrics; no repetitive, insanity producing, endless loops of "Happy Birthday" that some of you might remember from past Burns that were the progenitors of the more sophisticated PAudiotron era.

  • How many potties are blessed by the miracle of the PAudiotron? 100, with every bank of potties having a few PAudiotrons (excluding banks near Big Sound camps). Thus, everyone has the opportunity of receiving the genuine PAudiotron experience. At the same time, those that are unable to appreciate finer audio material may avoid the PAudiotron experience.

  • How can I experience PAudiotron? At Burning Man 2013, in the middle of each bank of port-a-potties, look for the PAudiotron sticker on the potty door (some of which may describe that potty's theme) and experience the magic. Here are the instructions that will be posted inside of the potties. You might also want to enjoy some of the sample PAudiotron tracks listed below to whet your appetite for more. And a downloadable ZIP file of selected PAudiotron playlists is also available from this website so that you might install it on your portable media player and enjoy more PAudiotron experiences than one normally has the opportunity encounter on the playa.

  • How can I help bring the PAudiotron experience to thousands of burners? Go here if you want to check out the opportunities to do PAudiotron pre-playa content creation (writing, voice acting, and audio engineering), or PAudiotron unit management (pre-playa production and on-playa field engineering).

  • What other PAudiotron events are happening? The PAudiotron Annual Shareholders Meeting on Thursday at 3:00 pm at the Thirsty Camel Bar in Silicon Village should be fun: By now you've had a PAudiotron port-a-potty experience, now come rubber stamp management's agenda, offer your ideas, or protest the outrage.

About the Project

While pondering the Universe while in a port-a-potty at Burning Man, the question as to why that experience had to be so nasty and boring arose. Pee Funnel Camp advertisements, as good as they are, grow thin after awhile. Why not have something interesting to listen to, right in the middle of the worst location at Burning Man? But how could it be done is a tasteful and subtle way? Quite a set of problems to address! This was the genesis of the project. You can read more about the project.
